The busy-ness of August, on the birth front, bled into September. Being on call means lots of time spent at home waiting: reading, sleeping, cooking, gardening....
This fucker is a medium sized specimen of his/her species(the hornworm, who becomes the hawkmoth: Manduca quinquemaculata). They can completely defoliate a tomato plant in a frighteningly short time. And don't say "no" to the fruit either. I pull several off my plants most days.
I've also been drying calendula, tulsi, comfrey. Steeping up some lemon balm ticture too.
Being 27 (tomorrow) means birthday cake. I made a "kindergarten" cake this week, with wild apple sauce. No pictures because it got eaten, but here is the recipe:
Mix together:
2 T cider vinegar
2 T vanilla extract
2 T Coconut oil, melted
1 1/2 c maple syrup
1 3/4 c water
Combine in a separate bowl:
1 t salt
3 c flour (spelt, AP, whole wheat or a combo)
3 t baking soda
1/2 cup carob powder
2 t cinnamon
Add the dry to the wet, stir until just combined, pour into an oiled and floured bundt pan, bake at 350 for 50 min. Rest 10 min, release from pan and cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar.
What's a girl doing baking her own cake? not to worry. I was also surprised with one, complete with out-of-context quote from Hoban's "the Marzipan Pig". Special, right?
